“Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” -Nelson Mandela This quote provides a powerful image of education. It truly is the only way we can arm our children to enter the world to fight for everything that is good. Their school experience should be one that is filled with love, compassion and learning. Students should feel they are a part of a classroom and school community. It is a teacher’s job to ensure this happens. Classroom environment is key in developing the rapport of the student to student relationships as well as the student to teacher relationships.
The world has often heard the phrase, “it takes a village to raise a child.” Although it has become somewhat cliche throughout the years, it is a vividly true statement. We all - community, school, businesses - must work together to raise the children that are so important to our future.
My classroom mirrors these philosophies. Although curriculum and instruction are paramount, character development takes precedence. In my classroom, students learn to function within a system that works together. They learn to be part of a group that is working for the good of everyone. Once those elements are solidified, the curriculum is a natural progression. Once the elements of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs has been met, students are able to open the minds freely to learning.
All of these are philosophies I carry with me into the classroom. I believe that all children can learn and they will learn. There is not an option. The lessons they will take from my classroom are lifelong lessons of family, cooperation, and of course the academic preparation to pave the way for their future.
